Hair Care Tips for the Summer Months

#1: Hydrate your hair with a deep conditioner! 

The sun, heat, and humidity during the summer months can be brutal on your hair.  During each salon visit or in the comfort of your own home when you’re shampooing your hair, take the time out to deep condition your hair.  This will help add back moisture that has been depleted during the dog days of summer! #2: Choose your shampoo wisely!
Invest in a good sulfate free shampoo!  If you have invested in a fresh new hair color that you love make sure you are also investing in products to maintain your new look! Sulfates in shampoo can cause your hair color to fade quickly.  Sulfates also strip the hair leaving it dry and brittle.  Do yourself a favor! Dump any old shampoos you’ve been using if they aren’t sulfate free.

#3: Consider giving your hair a break from the heat!
Try styles that don’t require a lot of direct heat.  Experiment with new styles! Try a rod set, twist out, braid out, or two strand twists.  You can also take it a step further and give your hair an extended break with a protective style.  A cute & trendy protective style currently making waves is crochet braids!

#4: Don’t forget the oils!
When you’re wearing natural styles like rod sets, twist outs or protective styles like crochet braids don’t forget the importance of adding oils to help maintain your hair’s hydration.  When your hair is in it’s curly or natural state it is harder for your scalp’s natural oil (sebum) to work it’s way down to the ends of the hair.  Consider oiling your scalp and hair during these times.

#5:  Drink plenty of water!
Water is not only good for keeping you hydrated and healthy but it’s also good for your hair.  Make sure you are drinking at least 8- 8 oz. glasses of water.  Staying properly hydrated will help give your skin a healthy natural glow as well as help hydrate your beautiful locks of hair.

#6: Don’t neglect your regular trims!
Get your hair on a regiment.  Make sure you are getting your treatments and trims every 6-8 weeks.  If your goal is beautiful healthy hair then you have to treat it well and properly care for it.  Don’t let those dead ends hinder your hair growth!  Keeping dead or split ends only leads to more split ends.  The longer you wait the more length you’ll lose in the end.

#7: Shampoo after EVERY swim!
Chlorine can be very damaging to your hair.  It causes dryness because it strips your hair and scalp of it’s natural oils (sebum).  If you’ve gotten your hair wet during a swim in the pool the first thing you should do is shower & shampoo your hair!
Tip: Try wetting your hair with shower water before you dive in or applying oil to your hair and scalp.  This will keep your hair from absorbing a lot of the chlorine in the pool.
